  • LOCATION

Cărturești Carusel is an architectural gem tucked into Bucharest’s historic Lipscani district, once the city's financial heart. Originally built in the early 20th century for the Chrissoveloni banking family, the building served as a bank headquarters, then a general store, and fell into disrepair until the early 2000s . In 2015, it reopened following a 5‑year, €400,000 restoration, transforming into a breathtaking bookstore with three main floors, a basement gallery, and a top‑floor bistro.

Inside, the space unfolds across six luminous levels, featuring curved balconies, an impressive central atrium, a sweeping spiral staircase, and ornate Byzantine-style stucco—a testament to its historical grandeur . The store displays over 10,000 books, 5,000 albums and DVDs, with a multimedia area and art gallery nestled in the lower floor.

More than a retail space, Cărturești Carusel functions as a cultural hub, hosting exhibitions, book launches, concerts, readings, and thematic events. The predominantly white interior and abundant natural light create a serene, modern atmosphere that preserves the authenticity of the space.

On the top floor, a bistro/tea room overlooks the atrium—a perfect spot to rest and reflect after browsing . Since its reopening, the bookstore has become a cultural landmark for both locals and visitors, earning international acclaim as one of the world’s most beautiful bookstores.

How to get there: Located at 55 Lipscani Street, near Stavropoleos Church, it’s just minutes away from Universitate metro station (M2) or Izvor (M1). The area is pedestrian-friendly and also accessible via tram or bus.
