In the center of Bucharest, at the corner of Colței and Slănic streets, rises one of the most remarkable buildings of the capital: the House with Sphinx. This emblematic construction, completed in 1928, impresses through its imposing dome, crowned by a unique sculptural ensemble, created by the famous sculptor Dimitrie Paciurea. Over the decades, the building has worn many faces: from a luxury shoemaking workshop to the headquarters of a secret Masonic lodge and, recently, a private residence restored by the Italian architect Leonardo Rossi.
A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Bucharest
Construction began in 1911 at the initiative of a renowned shoemaker who owned a workshop and a luxury shoe store. The building was designed to combine functionality with elegance, serving both as a residence and commercial space, reflecting the refined tastes of its owner.
The Sculptural Ensemble and the Mysterious Symbolism of the Building
The element that defines the uniqueness of the House with Sphinx is the sculptural ensemble on the dome, the only such group signed by Dimitrie Paciurea preserved on a private building in Bucharest. It represents a sphinx or a chimera, flanked by two mythological figures, overlooking the city and adding an aura of mystery and refinement.
During the interwar period, the building was more than a residence or shoemaking workshop. It is presumed to have hosted a secret Masonic lodge, as suggested by the rich symbolism of the building and historical testimonies. Although the exact details remain unknown, the presence of the lodge adds an additional dimension to the building's fascinating history.
Decline and Neglect During the Communist Period
After World War II and during the communist regime, the House with Sphinx experienced a difficult period. Lack of maintenance and negligence by authorities gradually led to the degradation of the structure and the partial loss of decorative elements.
During this time, the building lost its initial charm, becoming more a relic of the past than an active part of the city’s cultural life. Many Bucharest residents gradually forgot its significance, and the story of the mysterious sphinx on the dome remained only an echo in the memories of historians and architects.
Rediscovery and Restoration by Leonardo Rossi
The 2010s brought a new chance for the House with Sphinx. Italian architect Leonardo Rossi discovered the building and recognized its extraordinary potential. By purchasing the property, he initiated an extensive restoration process called "The Round House," aiming to return the building to its original glory.
The restoration included structural consolidation, reconstruction of architectural and artistic details, and integration of modern elements to ensure functionality for a contemporary residence. The project was nominated for the 2017 Bucharest Architecture Annual, in the “Architecture, Conversion, and Rehabilitation” section, being considered an outstanding example of eclectic architecture.
Eclectic Architecture and Artistic Symbolism
The House with Sphinx combines neoclassical elements with Art Nouveau influences. The façade is richly ornamented, with elaborate sculptures and elegant balconies, yet the main attraction remains the dome with the sculptural ensemble.
This ensemble represents a chimera or sphinx, accompanied by two mythological figures, possibly Hermes and another deity. Architect Leonardo Rossi describes the composition: “It is certainly a chimera, we see the face of an Egyptian woman, the wings of an eagle, and the tail of a snake. Chimera also means the being you believe you have conquered, but the closer you get, you realize it moves away. Here you feel you are face to face with this woman; she is near, but she is not what you thought she was.”
The symbolism suggests links to Greek and Roman mythology and reflects the cultural and intellectual interests of the original owner. This complexity also fueled speculation about the building being used as a secret Masonic lodge.
Urban Integration and Historical Value
The House with Sphinx is located very close to Colțea Hospital and integrates harmoniously into Bucharest’s urban landscape. It is listed on the Historical Monuments Register, recognized for its architectural and historical value, and represents an important landmark for heritage enthusiasts.
Rossi’s restoration revitalized the area and promoted the cultural heritage of the capital, showing how a historic building can be reborn through careful and respectful intervention.
Sfinx Espresso Bar – Coffee and Heritage
Currently, on the ground floor of the House with Sphinx operates Sfinx Espresso Bar, a specialty coffee shop located at Strada Slănic no. 2, right next to Colțea Hospital. It combines passion for high-quality coffee with appreciation for Bucharest’s architectural heritage.
The café has an interior with Art Deco elements, high ceilings, tables by the windows, and a welcoming atmosphere. Its schedule is Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 17:00 and weekends from 09:00 to 17:00, and it is family and pet-friendly.
A Culinary Experience in the Heart of History
The menu includes specialty coffee from Dropshot, pastries, New York rolls, fresh focaccia, lemon cookies, and cherry muffins. The café’s name is inspired by the sculptural ensemble on the roof, linking the visitors’ experience to the building’s history.
Visitors can enjoy coffee in a setting full of symbolism, where the past blends harmoniously with the present, and where the story of Dimitrie Paciurea and the original owner continues to be appreciated.
A Symbol of History and Urban Resilience
The House with Sphinx is more than a building; it is a witness to the evolution of Bucharest and the aesthetic tastes of an era. From a shoemaking workshop to a Masonic lodge and a modern café, the building reflects the adaptability and resilience of urban heritage.
Its restoration and transformation into a modern residential and cultural space demonstrate how historical values can be preserved and highlighted for current generations, keeping alive the memory of a fascinating era and an important cultural figure.
The House with Sphinx remains an emblem of Bucharest, a landmark connecting the past with the present, tradition with innovation. It is a place where art, architecture, mystery, and urban culture meet, offering a unique experience for those who cross its threshold, whether to admire the architecture, enjoy a coffee, or step into the captivating history of the capital.
Through its complex history and carefully executed restoration, the House with Sphinx remains a symbol of elegance, mystery, and urban resilience in the heart of Bucharest.
