Residents of Bucharest’s Sector 1 will pay local taxes directly to the district city hall. What changes from January 1, 2026

Starting January 1, 2026, residents of Bucharest’s Sector 1 will need to take into account an important change regarding the payment of local taxes and duties. Local authorities have announced a new payment framework that affects all payment methods, including online platforms and bank transfers.

The change does not concern tax rates or types of local obligations, but strictly the public entity receiving the payments. This detail is especially relevant for taxpayers who regularly use internet banking or digital payment platforms.

Who becomes the payment beneficiary from January 1, 2026

Until the end of 2025, local taxes and duties in Sector 1 were paid to the General Directorate of Local Taxes and Duties of Sector 1. As of the new year, all payments must be made directly to the Sector 1 City Hall.

As a result, taxpayers must use a new tax identification number (CUI) when making payments. The correct identification number to be used from January 1, 2026 is CUI 4505359, corresponding to the Sector 1 City Hall.

Using the former beneficiary details after this date may lead to payment processing issues or delays in registering paid amounts.

Why this change was introduced

According to the local authority, the measure is primarily based on compliance with current legislation, which requires local tax payments to be made into the budgetary accounts of the local public authority itself, rather than those of a subordinate structure.

A second reason is related to administrative reorganisation. The General Directorate of Local Taxes and Duties of Sector 1 has been integrated into the organisational structure of the Sector 1 City Hall, making it necessary to align financial and administrative processes with the new framework.

Officials state that the change aims to simplify procedures and ensure clearer tracking of payments made by residents.

Payment platforms that remain available

Sector 1 City Hall has confirmed that all recommended payment systems remain operational and have already been updated to reflect the new beneficiary and identification number. Residents may continue to use:

  • the national platform ghișeul.ro,
  • SelfPay payment stations, which allow both electronic and cash payments,
  • the online local tax platform for Sector 1,
  • the “DGITL Sector 1” mobile application.

For internet banking transfers made via mobile devices, tablets or computers, taxpayers must manually enter the new CUI of the Sector 1 City Hall when completing the transaction.

Authorities recommend using the officially supported digital platforms to reduce the risk of errors.

What taxpayers should check to avoid mistakes

Residents of Sector 1 are advised to carefully verify beneficiary details before making any payments after January 1, 2026. While the type of tax and the amount due remain unchanged, the change in the payment recipient is essential for correct registration.

For additional information or to report issues related to payments, residents can contact the local authority through its official communication channels. The announced changes do not involve new taxes or increased rates, but require extra attention from taxpayers, particularly during the first months of 2026.
