Located in Sector 6 of Bucharest, on Aleea Istru no. 6, the Special Secondary School “Sfânta Maria” is a public institution dedicated to the education of students with hearing impairments. Founded in 1919 by royal decree, it was the first school in Romania created for orphaned and deaf-mute girls. Today, it serves students aged 3 to 20, including those with cochlear implants, from Bucharest and several southern counties.
In February 2024, the school underwent a full renovation and modernization, supported by non-reimbursable funding of 4.8 million lei. Upgrades included new thermal insulation, doors and windows, interior finishes, as well as modernized plumbing and electrical systems. Classrooms and labs were equipped with new furniture, audio systems, surveillance cameras, interactive whiteboards, digital flipcharts, and video projectors.
The school follows a structured daily schedule: 4 hours of core curriculum, 1 hour of club activities, a lunch break, followed by Complex and Integrated Educational Therapy programs until 6:00 or 7:00 PM.
The educational team consists of specialized teachers, psychopedagogues, engineers, vocational instructors, psychologists, and audiologists, ensuring a multidisciplinary approach tailored to each student’s needs.
For the 2025–2026 school year, admissions follow the official calendar set by the Ministry of Education. Updated procedures and relevant information can be found on the school’s website.
