On Monday, Sector 4 Mayor Daniel Băluță announced the beginning of the reconstruction works on the Unirii Slab. Traffic on Splaiul Independenței, between Piața Națiunile Unite and Piața Unirii, is restricted, except for local residents. The mayor also recommends alternative routes.
“We're starting the reconstruction of the Unirii Slab! The first areas where work will begin are in front of Hanul lui Manuc and Unirii Park. During the construction period, traffic on Splaiul Independenței, between Piața Națiunile Unite and Piața Unirii, will be restricted, except for local residents,” Băluță stated in a Facebook post.
He also suggested the following detour routes:
- From Corneliu Coposu and Universitate – follow the temporary road through Unirii Park.
- From Calea Victoriei – follow the route: Națiunile Unite – Parliament Palace – Unirii Boulevard.
- From Eroilor – turn right on Libertății Boulevard, then left onto Unirii Boulevard.
“We now have the construction permit for the Unirii Slab. It was signed in the final days of Mayor Nicușor Dan’s term. I thanked him for the collaboration and wished him success in his future role as President of Romania. The permit was the only document we were missing. Now we have everything we need, including signed contracts. Therefore, starting next week—on June 10—we begin the complete reconstruction of the Unirii Slab,” the Sector 4 mayor stated a week ago.
According to the construction permit, the reconstruction of the nearly 100-year-old concrete slab will include: the regeneration of public spaces in the Piața Unirii area, rebuilding the riverbed structure of the Dâmbovița River, and the complete rebuilding of the Unirii Slab (also referred to as the bridge), which will have a final concrete thickness of about 1.4 meters.
Additional works will include the reconstruction of utility networks, road signage and markings, vertical systematization, creation of temporary roads, installation of irrigation systems, and temporary interventions on the fountains.
Mayor Băluță noted that the project will be carried out in four phases:
“All these works will be divided into four stages, corresponding to four distinct zones:
- Zone 1: In front of Hanul lui Manuc
- Zone 2: The park in front of Unirea Shopping Center
- Zone 3: The fountains area
- Zone 4: Toward Unirii Underpass,” he explained.
