Founded in 1990 by actor and director Mihai Mălaimare, Teatrul Masca is a truly unique presence in Bucharest’s cultural scene. It is the only theatre in Romania entirely dedicated to physical expression, gesture, and pantomime — a space where words step back and the body becomes the storyteller.
What makes it special
– Physical and pantomime theatre – performances built around the expressive power of the human body, often without dialogue, inspired by classical literature or modern themes.
– Indoor stage and street theatre – shows are performed both in the intimate indoor venue and in open-air urban spaces — parks, public squares, neighborhoods — blending movement, puppetry, living statues, and performance art.
– Community spirit – Masca engages deeply with its local audience through workshops, educational projects, teen programs, and participatory events rooted in neighborhood life.
Atmosphere & experience
The indoor stage is intimate, bringing the audience close to the performers and intensifying each gesture through proximity and silence. Outside, the theatre opens up in summer for open-air performances that invite spontaneity and interaction.
Programming & events
Theatre evenings, summer festivals, neighborhood tours, workshops, and anniversaries shape a dynamic, inclusive calendar. Masca is more than a stage — it’s a creative lab exploring the body’s expressive potential within the rhythm of the city.
