M6 to Otopeni: what changes on M4 from September 1 and how to organize as a commuter

From September 1, 2025, service on Metro Line 4 (Gara de Nord 2 – Străulești) is temporarily adjusted to connect the future M6 (1 Mai – Otopeni) to the existing network. The transfer is at Jiului station, where trains run on a single track between 1 Mai and Jiului; passengers get off and board the train on the adjacent track in the desired direction.

What this means for you (M4)

  • Between 1 Mai and Jiului, “track 2” is closed; trains on that stretch will run alternately on a single track. All passengers will change at Jiului. Station signage will indicate the opposite platform for trains toward Străulești or toward Gara de Nord 2.
  • Metrorex has also announced frequency adjustments on other lines (M1/M3) between September 8 and December 31 to absorb part of the flow. No specific headways were communicated for M4, so budget a few extra minutes at peak times.

Quick route guide (common cases)

  • Străulești / Bucureștii Noi → Gara de Nord 2: ride to Jiului, get off, cross to the adjacent track and continue toward Gara de Nord 2.
  • Gara de Nord 2 → Străulești: get off at Jiului and change to the train on the opposite track toward Parc Bazilescu – Străulești.
  • Alternative links to the center: at Basarab you have a fast transfer to M1; if you’re heading for M2, take M1 to Piața Victoriei. (The announced M1/M3 tweaks help cushion delays from the transfer.)

Useful STB alternatives along the M4 corridor

  • Trolleybus 97 connects Străulești – Bd. Bucureștii Noi – Calea Griviței – Gara de Nord – the center; handy if you want to avoid the Jiului transfer or you start from Bucureștii Noi/Dămăroaia.
  • Bus 304 links M Străulești – Piața Presei, good for connections to the northern area (DN1, exhibition grounds).
Practical tip: stick with the metro route, but if the Jiului platform crowds up at 7:30–9:30 AM / 5:00–7:00 PM, check your transit apps to see if 97 or 304 helps in the moment.

Why it’s happening now: the M6 works and the tie-in point

The M4 service change is required for connecting M6 (1 Mai – Otopeni), a public-utility project approved by Government Decision 496/2017. The future line will have 12 stations over 14.2 km, with the southern section (1 Mai – “Tokyo”/Băneasa) under construction.

Where M6 stands, in numbers (August 2025)

  • TBM “Sfânta Maria” broke through into the future Aeroport Băneasa station on August 18; on the southern section’s first leg, 902 m have been excavated and 602 rings installed. “Sfânta Ana” has over 406 m excavated and 265 rings installed on the other bore. Total southern tunneling is 6.6 km (1 Mai–Tokyo).
  • Contracts and contractors:
    • South (Lot 1.1: 1 Mai – Tokyo) – design + civil works: Alsim Alarko – Makyol; building permit issued 13.12.2023.
    • North (Lot 1.2: Tokyo – Otopeni Airport) – design + civil works: Gülermak – SOMET JV, contract signed May 2, 2023; building permit issued 06.08.2024.
    • Track/system/signalling (Package 2) – contract signed with SOMET (lead) on March 26, 2025.
  • Target timeline: the Ministry of Transport maintains an objective of opening by 2028 (depending on execution pace and funding).

Getting to/from the airport before M6 opens

Until M6 is operational, the Gara de Nord – Henri Coandă Airport train remains the most reliable fast option: it runs 24/7, roughly every 40 minutes, with a 20–25 minute journey time. Check the timetable in real time via CFR Călători / Infofer.

Quick Q&A

  • How long will the M4 restriction last? Metrorex has not published an end date for the Jiului constraints; the change is tied to M6 connection phases. Follow official updates.
  • Will wait times improve elsewhere? Yes—on M1/M3 the interval is reduced between September 8–December 31 (weekdays: 6 min; weekends: 9 min) to spread passenger flow.
  • Do you exit the paid area at Jiului? No. The transfer is within the station, between adjacent platforms.

What to remember as a commuter

  1. From September 1, 2025 you must change at Jiului when coming from/going to Străulești.
  2. Plan an extra 1–2 stops’ worth of time and use M1/M3 to detour if needed.
  3. Surface alternatives exist: 97 (Străulești – Griviței – Gara de Nord – center) and 304 (Străulești – Piața Presei).
  4. For OTP, the airport train remains the safe route until M6 opens.
